RELEASE: Heavy Metalloid Music Second Edition

Eternal Cavalier Press announces a new edition of:

Second edition with new epilogue and colour photos now available. Author on western Canada tour with Simply Saucer

Written by Toronto-based music journalist Jesse Locke (Weird Canada, Bandcamp Daily, Musicworks), Heavy Metalloid Music is the authorized biography of psych/proto-punk legends Simply Saucer. The book not only reveals the compelling history of one of Canada’s most important underground bands but also examines the ongoing legacy of fellow musical outsiders creating escapist fantasies in their hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. This has been documented with extensive interviews, rare photos, and an exclusive download compilation.

After the first edition garnered rave reviews and subsequently sold out, the second edition of Heavy Metalloid Music features a new epilogue by Locke. The epilogue sees Locke reflecting on his time spent drumming for Simply Saucer. He will join the band on an upcoming string of western Canada dates. (Listed below)

“An essential for music freaks and city-proud folks alike” – NOW Magazine

As a founding contributor of the award-winning online publication Weird Canada, Locke has made a career out of excavating underground sounds. It only makes sense that he has always been drawn to the cult heroes of Hamilton’s subterranean scene, Simply Saucer.

“More importantly, (Locke) gives us a glimpse of what key band members did between the 1979 breakup and their rediscovery in the new millennium.”- The Hamilton Spectator

Mostly unrecognized in their ’70s heyday, the electro-rockers were unheralded pioneers with a reputation that grows every year. Simply Saucer’s posthumous debut, Cyborgs Revisited, was first released in 1989 by Mole Sound Recordings. It earned further acclaim with a 2003 CD reissue from Sonic Unyon Records, and will be celebrated with a 40th anniversary expanded edition from In The Red in 2017. Locke contributed the liner notes to this release.

Heavy Metalloid Music combines Locke’s trademark sharp writing and investigative style with incredible access to Simply Saucer. This book is a must-have for fans of music biographies and may just turn Simply Saucer into your favourite band you’ve never heard of.

Heavy Metalloid Music doesn’t just cover the history of Simply Saucer, it also takes a longer look at the city that spawned them, Hamilton, Ontario, and the vast underbelly of its vibrant, eclectic music scene. As much as this is the history of Simply Saucer, it is also an expose of the Steel City’s underground, of the bands lurking just around that dark corner that everyone should have known about, even if they didn’t know where to look. It’s like a love story to a city and its homegrown musical achievements which, thankfully are being celebrated, even if most of it is posthumously.” – Label Obscura

Jesse Locke will be joining Simply Saucer for three upcoming western Canada dates. Locke will play drums for the band and will be selling the second edition of the book at merch tables afterwards.
